First-Aid vs. OSHA Recordable Quick Reference
Section 1: The “First-Aid” Safe Zone
These treatments are officially considered “First Aid” under California Title 8, Section 14300.7. These do NOT need to be recorded on your OSHA 300 log.
Non-prescription Medications At non-prescription strength only
Tetanus Immunizations Note: Hep-B and other immunizations ARE medical treatment
Cleaning & Soaking Wounds on the surface of the skin
Bandages Band-Aids, gauze pads, or Steri-Strips
Hot/Cold Therapy Use of heat or cold packs
Eye Washing Flushing eyes to remove irritants
Section 2: The “Recordable” Red Flags
When an injury crosses these thresholds, it becomes a “Medical Treatment” case. These MUST be recorded on your OSHA 300 log.
Prescription Medications Even a single dose of prescription-strength drug
Rigid Braces Any device with rigid stays or support
Sutures or Staples Any wound closing device beyond butterfly bandage
Lost Time Any injury resulting in days away from work
Restricted Work Employee can't perform routine job functions
Physical Therapy Multiple sessions of treatment by licensed therapist
