California Employee Handbook Requirements 2026
What Your CA Handbook Must Include + What to Avoid
California law requires specific policies in your employee handbook. Missing required policies undermines your legal defenses. This checklist covers every mandatory and recommended section.
Why Your Handbook Is a Legal Defense Asset
Under AB 2288's PAGA reform, employers who can show 'reasonable steps' toward compliance — including written policies — qualify for reduced penalties. Your handbook is evidence. A well-written handbook: (1) creates the policies you need to enforce discipline, (2) gives employees clear notice of your rules, and (3) is cited in your defense when claims arise.
Policies Required by California Law
